MY NAME IS FARMAN AND I NEED HELP: "My name is Farman. I can't speak. There
are no facilities available for my education" reads one of the many posters
being carried by differently- abled children who, along with their parents,
took out a protest march for protection of the right to education of such
children under the banner of All India Parents Association, at Jantar Mantar
in New Delhi on Saturday.
NEW DELHI:
Drawing attention to lack of facilities that prevent
differently- abled children from integrating with the mainstream, a march to
Parliament was organised on Saturday by the All-India Parents' Association.
Alleging that over two crore children with disabilities have been denied the
right to education, the Association submitted that differently- abled
children are the worst sufferers as they are deprived of all human and
fundamental rights.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Association
claimed that children with disability who are in schools fare no better
since they are denied facilities like special teachers, aids and appliances,
reading and learning material, barrier-free environment, special toilets,
ramps and the like.
"Even a premier institution like Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has admitted
before the Delhi High Court that they do not have any staff to take care of
the educational needs of the differently- abled children studying in their
schools." said Association president Ashok Agarwal.
Demanding that no government or private school deny admission to children
with disabilities, the Association has also sought more basic facilities.
Asserting that children with disabilities have a basic human right to
receive good quality education in the mainstream schools as guaranteed by
the Constitution, the Association demanded that all government schools
across the country be upgraded to the level of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan
schools.
"Schools should be so equipped with basic medical expertise that children
with disabilities may get appropriate medical assistance, guidance and
advice."
