CavinKare ABILITY Awards are National Awards that are awarded annually to just three individuals with disability. Jointly instituted by CavinKare(P) Ltd and Ability Foundation, these prestigious awards come in two categories :
•CavinKare ABILITY Award for Eminence: This is a single award given to just one individual, that salutes the exemplary achievement of an individual with disability who has not only overcome great odds towards achievement but has also contributed significantly to society by creating an organisation of his/her own. The award carries a citation, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh.
•CavinKare ABILITY Mastery Awards: These are three awards given to three individuals with disability in recognition of their extraordinary achievement in field of their choice – be it arts, film, medicine, science, industry, technology, education, community development, human rights, sports or more. The awards carry a citation, a trophy, and a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh, each

CHENNAI:
The eighth CavinKare Ability awards honoured four people who overcame their disabilities and made a difference to the lives of others.

The winner of the ‘CavinKare Ability Award for Eminence,’ Vedantam Sada Siva Murthy of Andhra Pradesh, who lost his legs in a train accident, started Chaitanya Artificial Limb Centre at Palakol near Rajahmundry and has helped over 600 people so far. An agriculturist, he has adopted his village Abbirajupalem.

‘Cavinkare Ability Mastery Awards’ were presented to Puja B. Subramaniam from Madhya Pradesh, Bajrang Lal Suthar from Rajasthan and Zamir Dhale from Gujarat.

Ms. Subramaniam who was diagnosed with a progressive neuromuscular disorder at the age of 12, has an extraordinary zest for life. She established an engineering consultancy company. Speaking after receiving the award, she said that she treated challenges in life as opportunities.

Mr. Suthar from Rajasthan, who hails from an economically backward family, was paralysed neck down and had to depend on his parents. However, with the sensation that he had in two fingers of his left had, he began writing and later painting.

Mr. Dhale, a person with hearing and visual impairment, works as an advocacy officer at Sense International (India) Ahmedabad. Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Mukul Wasnik said that the Central government had initiated the process to harmonise Indian laws with the United Nations Convention for Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities. He expressed the government’s solidarity with the mission of Ability Foundation to move towards an equitable society for every citizen with disability.

N. Murali, Managing Director of The Hindu, who presented the cheques to the award winners, said the awards represented the triumph of hope over adversity and triumph of human spirit and never say ‘no’ attitude. He lauded CavinKare and Ability Foundation for instituting the awards.

C.K. Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director of CavinKare, said the 8th edition of the awards received 218 nominations from 20 States. He said that the award winners were individuals who had gone beyond accepted norms to seek solutions.

Jayshree Raveendran, Founder and Managing Trustee said the Foundation, believed that inclusion was possible in all spheres. Mohini Giri, Chairperson, Guild of Service; Shravan Garg, Group Editor, Bhaskar Group; and actor Revathy spoke. Cultural programmes, including Yakshagana, Sufi Dance by wheelchair users, a song and a convergence of music and art, were put up.

CAVINKARE ABILITY Awards are National Awards that are awarded annually to just three individuals with disability. Jointly instituted by CavinKare(P) Ltd and Ability Foundation, these prestigious awards come in two categories (please note nomination can be made for one category only):

•     CAVINKARE  ABILITY Award for Eminence: This is a single award given to just one individual, that salutes the exemplary achievement of an individual with disability who has not only overcome great odds towards achievement but has also contributed significantly to society by creating an organisation of his/her own. The award carries a citation, a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
     Nominees should be persons with disability and be Indian citizens.
     A minimum of two references must be cited in the nomination form.
     For the award for Eminence, the nominee should have worked in India in his/her field of service for a minimum of three years. The result of the nominee’s social entrepreneurship should be evident and continuing at the time of nomination.

•     CAVINKARE  ABILITY Mastery Awards: These are three awards given to three individuals with disability in recognition of their extraordinary achievement in field of their choice – be it arts, film, medicine, science, industry, technology, education, community development, human rights, sports or more. The awards carry a citation, a trophy, and a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh, each.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
     Nominees should be persons with disability and be Indian citizens.
     A minimum of two references must be cited in the nomination form.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The screening process includes scrutiny and shortlisting, based on the details given in the nomination form. Site visits and reference checks by regional representatives will then further shortlist nominees, following which, an eminent jury will select the final awardees.

SENDING NOMINATIONS:
The completed nomination forms must be sent ONLY by post and must reach Ability Foundation on or before 30th October 2011. Nomination forms that are sent by Email/fax or incomplete/late submission WILL NOT be accepted.

The decision of the jury is final and binding. No correspondence whatsoever in this regard will
be entertained.
