Chandigarh UT Education Department has made Yoga compulsory from Class VI onwards in all the government senior secondary schools in the city. Emphasis will also be laid on other additional activities for the over all development of the students.
The decision comes less than a week after the Central Board of Secondary Education recommended additional 'exposure to sun' for improving 'bone health' of the students. For the purpose of coaching students in yoga, physical training instructors in the schools would undergo an extensive five days training course during the summer break.
The students would undertake the Yoga classes during the zero period which shall commence after the morning prayer. Those who wish to play other games can also play them in this zero hour.
DPI (S) S K Setia said, "Yoga is beneficial to the students in several ways. The benefits include strengthening of bones and muscles, increased stamina, relaxed attitude and enhancing the body flexibility. It also helps the students with learning disability."
Meanwhile, a circular regarding the same has been made issued to all the Senior Secondary Government Schools and they have been asked to make preparations for the same

Hi Vic,
This is gud news, for everyone. We all know how important yoga or any other form of excercise is for chlidrens development, and this step taken by the education department is going to ensure that. My only apprehension is, that if it is made compulsory students may not enjoy it as much, you know how students are... opposing things that are forced. At least thats how we were in our school days. But good work anyways, lets wait and watch how sucessful this is.
