Prevention and early detection are important components of the medical model. However, measures taken for these are insufficient. While the Pulse Polio drive and immunisation against diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus have been quite successful, efforts for the prevention of other conditions such as blindness, deafness and neurological disabilities have been dismal. The incidence of developmental disabilities (eg mental retardation, autism) has increased to an alarming level.

hi all,
i agree with puneet when he says that there have been insufficient measures in this direction. But i would also like to point out that the lack of awareness and prevailing superstitions among the masses are also proving to be major hindrances in the immunisation programme...and this is more prevalent among the lower socio-economic classes.
you will be surprised to know that many people believe that the vaccines would cause some disease or it is a drive by the government to sterilise their children inorder to control the population!
hence, it is really important to convince and educate the people about the salutary effects of immunisation...and we all can very well do it at a personal level... so, what about starting the awareness drive with your servant or housemaid?
